Mend a broken heart (or fill an empty stomach) with Charlotte Ree’s Nanny’s jam drops

When a divorce turned Charlotte Ree's life upside down, she turned to cooking as a way to cure her loneliness. Immersing herself in cooking – everything from boiled eggs to lasagne – helped Charlotte rediscover herself and, in turn, laid the groundwork for her new book, Heartbake: A Bittersweet Memoir. This unconventional cookbook documents the dates (both disastrous and delightful) and moments where good food (shared with strangers and significant others alike) helped Charlotte get back on track. These Nanny's jam drops – a cherished childhood recipe and one of Charlotte's earliest food memories – are ideal for soothing an aching heart, wooing a potential love interest or offering to your close friends and family as a token of how much they mean to you. more

Five delicious strawberry recipes to help support strawberry farmers

In case you've missed the news, Australian strawberry farmers are doing it tough right now. Due to lockdowns and cafe closures across the country, the Queensland Strawberry Growers' Association has estimated that there has been an approximately 50-percent reduction in strawberry demand in what would usually be the peak of the season. You may have noticed that the price of strawberries is super low at the supermarket – which is great for the buyer – but this low punnet price is less than the cost for farmers to grow and harvest them. This means that a number of farmers have already started spraying out and killing off fields upon fields of ripe, juicy strawberries so that they don't end up producing punnets at a loss. Australian strawberry growers have sent out a plea, asking us to go out and buy as many strawberries as we can to show our support. Stocking up on deliciously sweet… more

Invest in a little self-care this Saturday with a bowl of chicken gravy and crisp Brussels sprouts pasta

Forget the sourdough-baking addiction of early 2020, Elizabeth Hewson is reviving the ancient art of pasta making as the must-try stuck-at-home leisure pursuit to get us through this bizarre new reality. Combining self-care ritual with hunger-busting necessity, the foodie found that the slow act of crafting pasta by hand could serve as a form of therapy and keep her anxiety at bay during difficult times. As this year continues to throw challenges our way, many may find similar consolation from preparing their own bowl of comforting carbs. Pop on a soothing playlist and stir up this soul-cuddling pasta sauce of chicken gravy and crisp Brussels sprouts from Elizabeth’s forthcoming cookbook, Saturday Night Pasta. Elizabeth has put her own spin on this Italian favourite, describing it as “the dish that gives me a hug when the world does not”. If you want to take your culinary therapy a… more
