Two Trees moves to new location in South Brisbane

The lovely folk behind Two Trees espresso bar in West End have hopped one suburb over, opening a new space along Merivale Street in South Brisbane. Executing much of the handiwork themselves and recycling a lot of the original fit-out, Jordan and Mim have crafted a cafe of fresh white walls, warm wood and copper pipes. While the food licence should come through later this week, the cafe is still pouring its renowned espresso-based and cold-press coffee, as well as a Mörk hot chocolate sweetened with coconut blossom sugar. The new den’s seasonal menu may invigorate feelings of confusion and indecisiveness once launched, featuring dishes such as seasoned avocado on sourdough with housemade chipotle labneh, pulled pork sliders and cowboy baked beans with chorizo on sourdough. Black coffee culture grows in Brisbane

Coffee purists tend to take their coffee black, across a variety of different intricate brewing methods. While to the average cappuccino drinker, a cafe that serves only milk-less coffee may seem bizarre, it’s a model that’s finding a place in the Australian cafe scene. more

The Street Photographer: Four Barrel Coffee, San Francisco

Valencia Street was relatively quiet when Jeremy Tooker moved Four Barrel Coffee into the Mission District of San Francisco in 2008. The local independent coffee roastery is serious about its coffee, with the showpiece cafe seeing a Chemex brewing bar at one side, espresso machines in the centre and roasting equipment at the back. The roastery cafe draws a crowd with local punters happy to queue up for a perfect cup, serviced by two espresso machines constantly on the go, the baristas facing inwards. The eye-catching space melds raw woods and metals with plenty of natural light throughout the airy, cavernous cafe. Jeremy has also just opened The Mill – a collaboration with local Josey Baker Bread – pairing the simplicity of Four Barrel Coffee with a delectable bread station. Witness the art of Coffee Portraiture

Turning the motions of making coffee into an art form, New York-barista Mike Breach manipulates milk and espresso into detailed portraits within minutes. Drawing the faces of Chelsea Clinton, Shakespeare, Batman and Hendrix, as well as bears, sharks and skylines onto each morning cup, Mike says the beauty of his coffee portraiture is that it doesn’t last forever, each one painted just for that person to see and enjoy in the fleeting moments before their first sip. Watch Mike in action in this short film. more
