Consideration is given to every step of the coffee process, from partnering with producers who are mindful of their people, environment and crop, to ensuring respect for the bean is carried through from planting to harvest, and in roasting and preparation. Coava Coffee Roasters does not blend its coffee and names each varietal after the farmers who grow the original plant, honouring the care taken within the crop to cup process. Set within the showroom of eco-design company Bamboo Revolution, the brew bar melds both modern and antique elements, with old industrial worktables and handcrafted wooden stools sitting alongside the curvilinear bar. Spot the complex flavours of each bean on offer as you sip your brew in either espresso or filter form. The friendly folk behind the bar will happily walk you through the motley of flavours and notes coming through each steaming cup. Check out Coava… more

The morning coffee run is a sacred ritual for many of us, but what’s a Brisbane dweller to do when the forehead is gathering sweat beads before we’ve even stepped out of the house? We’ve scoured the fridges of our favourite caffeine haunts to track down Brisbane’s best cold coffees. more

BioCup Art Series combines art and coffee

You may be convinced it’s what’s on the inside that counts – but when it comes to eco-friendly packaging, well the outside counts very much indeed. We were already mighty impressed with the plant-based, biodegradable and compostable coffee cups rolling out of the BioPak factory, but now the range has also been blessed with some ecologically themed art. Six Australian artists have explored environmental themes to create six gorgeous new designs for the first limited-edition release of the BioCup Art Series. The results include Rose Dambelli’s Australian Dream, Jessica Bee’s Swimming in the Sky and Mark Gerada’s Sustainability. BioCup paper is sourced from managed plantations, while its waterproof bioplastic lining is made from an annually renewable resource. Keep an eye out for the BioCup Art Series in a cafe near you. more

Sample rare Colombian coffee at One Drop this week

To celebrate the store’s fourth birthday, One Drop Specialty Coffee has acquired a limited amount of a rare Colombian coffee from Proud Mary Coffee Roasters in Melbourne. Blind tested at the El Robles organic farm in Bucaramanga, Colombia, by Proud Mary’s owner Nolan Hirte, the blend is called HR61 – as it was the 61st out of 70 experimental beans from the farm’s varietal garden. This mystical varietal garden allows the farm’s owner Oswaldo Acevedo to observe both old and new varietals on his property to see which ones work, and which may be of interest to the specialty coffee market abroad. Likened to a Geisha varietal, the HR61 bean has not been seen before and has the appearance and quality of an heirloom coffee from Ethiopia. Notes of strawberry, peach, lily, rose and apricot form a floral aroma, which is met by a creamy body. The most expensive coffee to come out of… more
