His name is Peter Wolff, from Wolff Coffee Roasters, and over the years he has picked up a swag of awards for his undeniable talent in getting the best out of the bean. Using simple geometry, the One Kiln coffeemaker is a minimalist design pourover structure by Japanese design studio Threetone. The coffee-making set is manufactured at a remote ceramics studio in Kagoshima, with each piece crafted by hand, harnessing the wabi-sabi aesthetic. The designers wanted to create a traditional coffeemaker that would not only look good when kept on the kitchen counter, but also operate with superior functionality. The set comprises two mugs, a stand and the dripper cone, which is made from Hasami Porcelain. The brand also crafts a range of tableware and servingware from glass, wood, porcelain and fabric. more

Campos cafes now offer coldpress coffee

As filtered brewing methods spread across the Brisbane cafe scene, there has been an irrepressibly positive spirit among local coffee purists. With an intricate brewing technique and flavour, coldpress coffee has become a popular choice for those looking for an alternative to more popular brews. Coffee connoisseurs can rejoice with the arrival of coldpress coffee at Brisbane coffee roaster Campos Coffee. With the ideals of flavour and freshness engrained in its ethos, Campos is now a destination for coldpress coffee in black and milk varieties. The two cold-drip blends are the result of a cold-extraction method that sees filtered water poured over single-origin beans for an extended period of time. It delivers a naturally sweeter taste with lower acidity. The black and milk concoctions are bottled on-premises, chilled and sold at Campos cafes including Gasworks, Wandoo Street and… more

Annual black coffee day returns to Bunker this Friday

We can usually trust Bunker in Milton to be open to calm our caffeinated needs when a public holiday rolls around – affording those who don’t reside or work in the area an indulgent trip to this weekday-only haunt. This Good Friday, Bunker will indeed again be treating tastebuds, but not with the usual espresso-based creations. The espresso machine will be rolled away, making room for the coffee wizardry that occurs for Bunker’s annual black coffee day. The hole-in-the-wall haunt will be brewing next-level all-filter coffees from Brisbane’s Cup Coffee Roasters, the UK’s Small Batch Coffee Company, Melbourne’s Code Black Coffee Roasters and Proud Mary Coffee Roasters. Head along this Friday April 18 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. more

Turn cold brew into cocktails with Slingshot Coffee Co.

There are many fine artisans who have mastered the craft of cold brew of late and another to add to the lauded list is North Carolinian collective, Slingshot Coffee Company. In addition to roasting its own single-origin beans, Slingshot takes a seasonal approach, changing its beans depending on the time of year so that it is always using the freshest crops. The team then hand brews and bottles the cold press in small batches, adding only one other ingredient – filtered tap water – to allow the beans’ flavours to shine. The company produces two cold-coffee varieties – a ready-to-drink cold brew served neat over ice, and a coffee concentrate, which can be topped up with hot or cold water or milk as desired. And if you’re partial to taking your coffee in nightcap form, Slingshot lists a number of intriguing ways to use cold brew in your home cocktail creations. more

Travel x coffee: the hand grinder

The art of travelling well would not be complete without your own hand grinder and aeropress to take along for the journey – especially when you’re wilderness or remote-community bound. For the nomadic specialty coffee drinker, invest in a mini hand grinder from Porlex or Hario, which will pack up neatly in your luggage. Alternatively, if travel is not on the cards but home coffee brewing is a daily ritual, gaze your eye towards the Hario Skerton hand grinder, which uses ceramic conical burrs to produce a range of different grinds. Or to take the bicep burn out of your morning cup, invest in a Delonghi push grinder, which still allows you to select three types of grinds and sits within a similar price range. Alongside coffee, you can also use your hand grinder to turn buckwheat kernels or rice into flour. Instant campfire pancakes. Image via Minimally Minimal. more

Discover the brews of Canadian roastery Anchored Coffee

Stepping foot inside coffee shop Two If By Sea in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia may not be in our near future, but Canadian roastery Anchored Coffee has caught our eye nonetheless. The team then carefully develops the seasonal coffee, roasting weekly to order. The Tiller Coffee in Alderley has a little sample of Anchored Coffee’s Rwandan espresso blend at the moment – which they might share if you ask politely. more

Crooked Nose creates Coffee Stories in Lithuania

It’s not often that Lithuania springs to mind when considering the coffee capitals of the world. But Crooked Nose & Coffee Stories is growing the Baltic State’s reputation as a nation of coffee artisans. Founded in 2011 and based in downtown Vilnius, Crooked Nose roasts seven different coffee blends – or ‘stories’. It also concocts its own hand-bottled cold brew, which is steeped for 14 hours and double filtered to create a soft-textured dark concentrate. The team also runs Sunday’s Coffee Club – where punters are introduced various blends of coffee and stories of growing, selecting, roasting and blending beans – and a coffee conference called Dark Times. more
