The Street Photographer: The Roastery Cafe

While the smell of roasting coffee wafts from the roasting half of the converted warehouse, accents of red, white and yellow catch the eye at The Roastery Cafe. Taking appearance seriously, The Roastery Cafe has ensured its latte art isn’t the only thing to be hitting top design notes since opening in March this year. Workers cage lights hang above the shiny La Marzocco machine, while a rustic wooden communal table sits in the middle of the cafe space. Colourful stools span the length of a wooden bench on one side, the trio of hues continuing the theme to the alleyway seating space out the back of the cafe. Here exposed brick wall meets vibrant street art – a pleasant spot to sip on one of Rouge Coffee’s four refined blends or a Tea Drop tea. Check out The Roastery Cafe on The Street Photographer. more

Rustic wooden cafe tables sit atop vintage Singer sewing-machine bases, while herbs grow in the courtyard and vintage cotton spools are used as table numbers – welcome to the peaceful ambience of Bean On Dean in Toowong. It may be a busy breakfast nook of families, lady-date catch-ups and rolled-out-of-bed students, but Bean On Dean manages to pack a lot in while still keeping things spacious and restful. Inside, soft-glowing cage lighting contrasts the delicate jars of herbs and ferns, while the street-art wall mural and bright green La Marzocco machine serving creamy Campos lattes perks up visitors. The Street Photographer: Fifth Battery Coffee Roasters

The Gowty family has built themselves a little coffee empire, with four Brother Espresso cafes and the Bread & Butter general store now under its wing. At the heart of these cafes is their own brand of coffee, roasted out of a warehouse-meets-cathedral-like space in the side streets of Fortitude Valley. Opened in 2010, Fifth Battery Coffee Roasters is a half-cylindrical space where the roastery mixes with an expansive cafe. Metal caging and stained glass separate the half-pipe into open sections, with a street-art decorated, sun-lit counter and roaster space at the front and a leafy, aviary-esque nook at the back. Named after Grandfather E. G. Gowty, who was drafted to the 5th Battery 2/2 Heavy Anti-aircraft Regiment in World War II, Fifth Battery Coffee Roasters is a chilled spot for a light breakfast accompanied by a mean cup of specialty espresso that’s been sourced, secured… more

The Street Photographer: Grindhouse Specialty Coffee

A true hole-in-the-wall coffee destination, Grindhouse Specialty Coffee at Stones Corner is tucked inside an old garage, in a carpark, off a laneway, near Logan Road. The walls and ceiling are lined with empty coffee sacks from around the world, making the interior resemble a rustic tent-like ambience. Nestled among the golden tones of the sacks, low wooden tables and ambient industrial lighting is the feature of this espresso bar – a deep red La Marzocco coffee machine. Serving up a number of signature blends across an array of alternative brewing methods, Grindhouse Specialty Coffee is a haven for local caffeine connoisseurs. Ever-changing single-origin blends from the likes of Brazil and Tanzania slot into the menu next to a house blend, all sourced from Dramanti Artisan Roasters at Wynnum and Supreme Roasters at Yatala. Ivy vines creep from the outside in, snaking their way along the walls and ceiling of this tiny concrete cave. After discovering a war bunker constructed during World War II, Marcus Allison turned the disused space into a comforting haunt for the coffee and hot-chocolate obsessed denizens of the neighbourhood. Whether huddled inside, cradling a warm cup of organic, fairtrade hot chocolate and a book, or sprawled across the sidewalk for a post-cycle coffee with friends, Bunker is an espresso haven where community is key and source, quality and fairness are highly valued.
