The Superthing team opens Cordelia Sourdough Bakehouse, a source of artisanal loaves, toasties and pastries

When the pandemic hit, many of us had a crack at making sourdough. For some of us, the foray into baking yielded delightfully doughy results, but for others the experiment went catastrophically south. The biggest takeaway, especially for the latter group, is that sometimes baking is best left to the experts. Well, those experts – or, more specifically, the ones behind West End's NYC Bagel Deli and Superthing – have just opened Cordelia Sourdough Bakehouse in South Brisbane. This striking bakery and cafe is dedicated to showcasing the wonderful complexity of sourdough, serving an assortment of loaves made from a variety of starters as well as a menu featuring elevated toasties, burgers made using cultured milk buns, hand-rolled bagels and flaky croissants. more

It’s here – Agnes Bakery opens the doors to its anticipated permanent home on James Street

Agnes Bakery was born from necessity, but stayed around because of popularity. When the city shut down in the wake of COVID-19 restrictions, 'pivot' became the word of the day and experimental concepts started proliferating around town. Of all the operators that swivelled in order to keep their businesses afloat, few garnered such a rapturous public response as Agnes' pop-up woodfired bakery and bottle shop. The bakery's delightfully crusty loaves of malted sourdough, cinnamon-coated doughnuts and charred and flaky Basque cheesecakes quickly cemented themselves as must-have items, and its smoked butter became a thing of legend. More than a year on and several pop-up appearances later, Agnes Bakery is celebrating the opening of its permanent woodfired dispensary on James Street today, Thursday October 21. There will be danishes, kouign-amanns, choux buns and cakes by the slice – there… more

Devour picture-perfect pastries and dreamy doughnuts at Bulimba’s Darvella Patisserie

If we had enough pull to influence the writing of the history books, we'd emphasise the role sweet treats and baked goods had on getting us through 2020. When lockdowns made us crazy, croissants helped. When restrictions had us down in the dumps, we turned to doughnuts. Even though a new year has started, we're not expecting our dependence on carbs to lessen, which is good, because newly opened Bulimba bakery and patisserie Darvella has some treats that are too irresistible to ignore. This European-inspired dispensary is slinging gooey Nutella-filled doughnuts, Swiss-chocolate infused croissants and heavenly cakes by the score.
