The round-up: where to feast on fancy fries and chomp on cheerful chips

There’s nary a vegetable that invokes such positive vibes as potato. These versatile little nuggets are like sexy people – they look great naked, but sometimes when you see them all dressed up it just takes your breath away. Whilst the humble spud stands alone as a hero of the culinary world, these fine food institutions have taken it upon themselves to give their fries and chips some extra jazz. Sweet, carby Jesus, take us to tater-church because we are ready to testify.

Santa Monica: We’re feeling the California love at Santa Monica, where the kitchen crew dish up some damn tasty takes on street-style fries. The classic combo of cheese and bacon is taken up a notch with cheeky jalapenos and the pulled pork offering is pure decadence. Vegetarians can get in on the action with the bruschetta-inspired street fries with sour cream and guac.

Embassy Bar: For the more discerning potato customising enthusiast, Embassy has got your back. Start with regular or sweet potato fries and add any combination of cheese, chilli mince, smoked brisket, peri-peri chicken and/or a smothering of gravy. Build me up, buttercup.

Pit Boss American BBQ & Eats: These guys should just change their name to Potato Boss, because that’s what they are. Old faithful menu staples such as cheesy fries and chilli cheese fries are joined by pulled pork and brisket fries as well as – wait for it – mac’n’cheese fries. Carb heaven.

Mr America Hotdogs and Fries: Sweet baby Cheesus, these fries are what we have been praying for. Keeping it USA with flavours like Mississippi Cajun, the folks at Mr America melt the cheese topping their delectable flavoured fries with a dang BLOWTORCH, son! Dinner and a show? Sign us up.

ChipTease: When it comes to fries, this one is a no-brainer. The mobile mavericks at ChipTease have got all bases covered for lovers of the chip – as well as Mexican and Canadian inspired offerings, these guys have dessert sweet potato fries on lock.

Ze Pickle: Chippies and beer and a classic combo, and Ze Pickle have cut out the middleman with their take on loaded fries. In addition to maple-smoked bacon and their signature ZP sauce, these bad boys are smothered in an IPA beer cheese sauce that simply must be tasted to be believed.

Mr Burger: Sick of the hype yet? We’re not, because Mr Burger is effin’ delicious. Deal with it. As well as the signature trucker fries (the special sauce is an actual dream) the toppings for their fries rotate regularly, with one such example being the pure magic of a pizza-inspired offering. Two superfoods converging as one? Shut up and take our money.

Getta Burger: The filthy fries at Getta Burger are the stuff of legends, with the ingredients list reading like a small novel. Crispy chips topped with cheese, pulled pork, grilled onion, maple bacon, barbecue sauce, ranch AND mustard – commence heavy breathing/drooling.

West End Charcoal: If there were some kind of jazzy fries Olympics, West End Charcoal would take out the gold. There are SEVEN different and delicious options on the menu, including a Mediterranean offering with baba ganoush and mozzarella that’s totally baller (and vego).

Zero Fox: An Asian restaurant in a fries round-up? Now now, naysayer, we have news for you. The crafty crew at Zero Fox have looked outside the box to bring you kimchi fries – chips topped with the delicious Korean flavour sensation and a little cream cheese mix for extra decadence.

Brooklyn Depot: The skinny fries at Brooklyn Depot stand alone as moreish morsels of snackage, but patrons are given the option to Brooklynise their fries for a little extra. With the addition including bacon, crispy onion strings, cheese and fried pickle coins, it’s well worth the upgrade.

Locos Kitchen & Bar: You’d have to be loco to skip out on the spud perfection on offer here – loaded fries with blue cheese sauce and pulled pork sit on the menu alongside loaded jacket potato (!!!) fries with crispy skin and sour cream to appease the hungry vegetarian.
