Spring menu round-up: spotlight on Brisbane’s best breakfasts
A leisurely breakfast is the perfect way to start the weekend. From freshly baked sourdough to gooey poached eggs and fresh açai bowls, we’ve rounded up more than 20 of Brisbane’s best breakfast locations for you to try out.
Scout on Petrie Terrace is renowned for the best breakfast bagel in town, with a fried egg, melted cheddar cheese, kaiserfleisch (think thick-cut, double-smoked bacon), tomato, rocket, house-made relish and aioli stacked on a fresh bun. For something different, try the huevos rancheros at Southside Tea Room, or if you are feeling more luxurious, Pearl Cafe’s Moreton Bay bug omelette will hit the spot.
South Brisbane’s Merriweather is sure to please with house-made vegetarian baked beans with herbs, mascarpone and poached egg, while Upper Mount Gravatt’s The Palms will tempt you with its ‘puffy dogs’ – puff pastry-wrapped chorizo with slow-cooked eggs and Josper-smoked tomato tapenade. Little Brew on Latrobe Terrace is dishing up prawn and jamon with nam jim scrambled eggs on Vienna bread, and The Burrow’s new summer menu features the David Speckham, a feast of crispy speck, seasoned avocado and cherry tomatoes on sourdough with a side of poached eggs. If you’re a bit of a slow starter in the morning, Pablo at New Farm will have you covered with breakfast until 2:30 pm – try the smashed peas with zucchini and mint, lemon ricotta, grilled haloumi and double-smoked Barossa speck bacon.
Those with a hankering for eggs can give their tastebuds a Middle-Eastern treat, with the shakshuka from Shouk Cafe – Tunisian-style eggs baked in a tomato, capsicum and spice sauce, served with toasted challah, olives and Persian fetta. Otherwise, head to Coorparoo’s Ave Cucina for the Rosario Eggs, or Cleveland’s Doug and Pearl for a classic eggs benedict. Potato fiends will love the potato and fetta roesti with creamed sweet corn, poached egg and herb salsa from Harveys, or choose from a variety of flavours from Roesti Revolution, popping up each week at markets around town.
For a lighter option, Raw PawPaw’s Lifestyle Board features a selection of avocado, roasted cherry tomatoes, poached eggs, beetroot relish, goats cheese, dukkah and sourdough, or head to Sourced Grocer for it’s classic smashed avocado and labneh on sourdough. Stafford’s Elixir Coffee has recently launched a new menu, featuring a quinoa and potato cake topped with salmon and fresh avocado salsa, and Nantucket Kitchen & Bar is serving bircher muesli with lemon-myrtle yoghurt and shaved apple. Açai-bowl lovers can get their fix at Corner Store Cafe, served with 11-seed-and-nut granola and seasonal fruit, or head to Coco Bliss in Bulimba, South Brisbane or Nundah to build your bowl of choice.
Lunchtime favourite Botanica Real Food has just launched a new pop-up shop in its Red Hill store, offering takeaway breakfast options on Tuesdays to Fridays from 6:00–9:00 am from October 22. Expect fresh sourdough tartines with cashew nut cream cheese, roasted pumpkin and basil; strawberries and cream chia-seed pudding and poached apple and raspberry breakfast crumble.
Those with a sweet tooth will drool over Willow & Spoon’s Belgian waffles with ricotta, passionfruit and honey, or Plum Tucker’s salted-caramel waffles with house-made salted caramel sauce, fresh banana, blueberries and vanilla ice-cream. Winn Lane’s Ben’s Burgers pay tribute to music royalty with the BB Elvis – a breakfast burger of bacon, peanut butter, banana and maple syrup. Specialty coffee roasters The Single Guys will serve up your first meal with a fresh brew, but make sure you try the Fruity French Toast, with pistachios, rosewater rhubarb, creme anglaise and Persian fairy floss. Or you can always make a selection from the all-day breakfast menu at Dovetail on Overend in Norman Park, chased by a cheeky nodo donut for dessert.
