The Weekend Series: where to find Brisbane’s seriously slurp-worthy soups

Forget your lacklustre cup-o-soups – comfort food doesn’t get more comforting that a hot bowl of freshly made broth. Warm your bones this winter with some delicious soups from some of Brisbane’s finest kitchens. Don’t worry, there are no Soup Nazis here.

Western Style
When we talk about Western style soup, we are referring to the traditional recipes such as pumpkin, tomato or potato and leek soup. There are a bundle of soup spots that offer delicious variations on the classics, perfect for chasing away a chill. Pasta Pantry is the spot to go for a delicious bowl of roast pumpkin, kumera and red lentil soup or healthy chicken broth. Soupa offers a selection including tomato, pumpkin, eggplant or Italian meatball, while Spring Hill Deli has two kinds worth trying – the ajiaco soup and the spinach and chickpea soup. Fromage The Cow serves up some hearty French onion soup served in a bread bowl, while the Paleo Cafe offers a rotating selection of soups daily. Finally, if you want to enjoy some tasty soup in the comfort of your own home, head to Homeslice and take away one of its rotating flavours, which often includes potato and leek, chicken soup, Thai pumpkin and tomato and chilli.

Eastern Style
Brisbane is booming with bangin’ broths from some fantastic Asian eateries. Noodle soup is all the rage and there are plenty of varieties to choose from depending on taste. Paddington and Kenmore residents (as well as Wilston in the near future) should spend some time sampling the soups at Sichuan Bang Bang, which offers two tasty varieties – the Bang Bang chicken and sweet corn broth and the Sichauan hot and sour vegetable soup. Tibetan Kitchen offers some very tasty bowls, with the Mount Everest Soup (chicken or vegetarian dumplings in a hot spicy soup), and the Tibetan style soup being regular favourites. If there is one soup variety that is sure to satisfy, it’s pho fo’ sho’. There are plenty of good pho spots around town, but The Vietnamese, Little Saigon Grill and Phat Phở make some mean sliced beef and noodle soups. Rounding out our selection is ramen, which is increasing in popularity in Brisbane. Hai Hai, Taro’s Ramen and Genkotsu are hot broth spots with a range of flavours to try.
