Chopsticks at the ready – chow down on yum cha bites at contemporary Chinese eatery Brisbane Phoenix

Since its opening in the luxe Brisbane Quarter precinct just last year, Brisbane Phoenix has become a Brisbane City dining-crowd favourite. The Chinese restaurant serves up mouth-watering contemporary and traditional a la carte dishes, as well as a seriously impressive yum cha selection – lobster tails, anyone? Following a temporary closure of its doors due to COVID restrictions, the sophisticated Chinese eatery is back and better than ever and ready to fill your tum with delicious seafood morsels, steamed dumplings, roast meats and much more. Now, grab those chopsticks!

Brisbane Phoenix flew in to our fine city mid-last year, channelling its four popular New South Wales sibling venues. The Sydney-born family-oriented Phoenix Group is well known for its top-tier yum cha service and a la carte menu of traditional and modern Chinese fare, and its Brisbane restaurant is no exception. Located in Brisbane Quarter’s world-class dining precinct, the 180-seat venue (that for now, due to social distancing regulations, sits a smaller crowd) embraces the group’s signature moody aesthetic and ambience. Black, red and gold detailing give subtle nods to Phoenix’s Chinese origins, set against dark timber paneling and brass accents.

While the setting certainly adds to your overall dining experience, the real drawcard of Brisbane Phoenix is undoubtably the food. The restaurant’s sizeable yum cha menu has a mouth-watering line-up of steamed and fried morsels, all guaranteed to have you ordering seconds (and thirds). Start off with baskets of fresh crab-meat xiao long bao, pan-fried prawn and kimchi Shanghai dumplings, steamed pork ribs in mild chilli sauce or for a sweet treat, try the fried black-sesame custard ball. Then make your way through Brisbane Phoenix’s kitchen snacks menu that includes the likes of lobster tails, spicy salt-and-chilli calamari, fried egg noodles and a plethora of roast meats (roast duck, barbecue pork and soya chicken). The a la carte menu offers everything you want and more from Chinese eats, with choice picks like the slurp-worthy prawn and pork wonton soup, a whole Peking duck served with pancakes and san choi bau, lobster tail with garlic butter, pan-fried wagyu beef in roasted-sesame sauce, drunken chicken and a whole lot of live seafood – anyone for a freshly caught mud crab?

Thirsty folk can sip from an extensive drinks list that includes an array of champagne, Australian and Chinese wines, imported and local beers, and a collection of cocktails. For those who want to celebrate something special, Brisbane Phoenix offers three private dining rooms that are tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the restaurant – the Diamond, Ruby and Emerald rooms. The Diamond Room boasts a stately Calcutta marble wall, plush velvet seats and striking pendant lighting, and is the perfect setting for a luxe private party. Each room is equipped with televisions to double as a multi-functional space, while the Ruby and Emerald rooms can be merged into a single large room for bigger get togethers.
