The fanciful general store Bread & Butter opens in Bulimba

Waking early, while the kids were still tucked in bed, Dad would walk up to the corner shop for the weekend papers, a loaf of bread and a stick of butter. Returning to a buzzing household, the portions of fresh hot bread would be divvied up, a cube of butter melting onto each warm slice, topped off with a drizzle of honey.

These simple essentials have inspired the newly opened Bread & Butter in Bulimba. An offshoot of the Brother Espresso empire, this new general store venture adjoins the Riding Road cafe, providing locally sourced yoghurt, milk and condiments. Stocking Le Sebastian breads, Maleny Dairies milk, Barambah Organics and The Collective yoghurts, and Sonoma muesli, many of the products at Bread & Butter are from the same producers used to create Brother Espresso’s menu.

While food and drinks are definitely the focus, a few ‘corner shop’ items also sneak into the mix, like the day’s paper, indie magazines, The Hungry Workshop cards and Uppercut Deluxe hair products. David’s Cold Brew coffee extract can also be bought straight from the fridge ready to mix at home, strategically positioned next to bottles of agave syrup for iced-coffee drinkers with a sweet tooth. There are also neat urns of South Burnett olive oil and honey from Stradbroke Island, ready to pour and bottle your own. Creating a general store of the modern, gourmet kind, Bread & Butter is a refreshing addition to the Oxford Street precinct.
