Birdcage Pan Asian Cuisine opens in old Bistrot Bistro space

French favourite Bistrot Bistro quietly closed its doors over the festive season, with Birdcage Pan Asian Cuisine quick to lap up the opportunity to open in this iconic Woolloongabba precinct.

Birdcage Pan Asian Cuisine is the creation of chef Darryl Marsden. Originally from Brisbane, Darryl completed his apprenticeship at The Crest International (now The Sebel Citigate), before jetsetting overseas for about 25 years, working in London, Bermuda, Hawaii, Malaysia and Indonesia, and travelling throughout Southeast Asia for the past 15 years.

Inspired by these travels, the Birdcage menu sees a broad array of Asian cuisines come into play, with Vietnamese and Malaysian flavours prominent. Amongst the entrees, find Oxtail Braised in Star Anise and Lemongrass, with Steamed Chinese Pancakes and Chilli Jam, while mains include the Roasted Duck Breast in Red Thai Curry with Caramelised Pineapple, Apple Eggplant and Roasted Shallots. Former Bistrot Bistro chef Matthew Baillie has continued on in the kitchen, with a little French flavour evident in the Oven-Baked Duck Fat Potatoes.

Preserving the original decor of the character-filled building, Darryl has added just a few oriental accents, with the function space downstairs still operating. The full cocktail bar allows patrons to pop in just for drinks, with cocktails like the Jungle Juice, Ho Chi Minh Mary and Vietnamese Espresso Martini tempting lounging a while.
