Betty’s Espresso opens in West End
Live music venue The Waiting Room has witnessed a lot of things in its time, but the new cafe that’s popped up inside its paunch has got to be one of the loveliest.
The 1990s are back – and they taste good. Step inside the sweet old Queenslander on Browning Street and you’ll discover the endearing new Betty’s Espresso specialising in nostalgia-inducing spiders, cherry cola and hearty sandwiches and bagels. Hang out with friends old and new, listening to a spot of vinyl or bring your own, and join in a game of Jenga or Wheel of Fortune. The lovely lady behind the venture is Cat Outridge Field, who has named her first cafe in honour of her granny, Betty.
Cat blends imaginative vegan milkshakes like peanut butter and jelly from a fairy-lit window and fills a cute-as-pie mug collection with robust Colombian Reserve coffee. The lactose averse will be sated with almond, goat, oat, coconut, lactose-free and Bonsoy milks, while sweet-tooths can nibble on macaron combinations like salted caramel popcorn, chocolate chilli and key lime pie. Sink in to one of grandma Betty’s couches, plug in to the free WiFi and soak up a spot of The Go-Betweens with a slice of Elvis-inspired frozen banana and peanut butter cheesecake. In keeping with The Waiting Room’s welcoming vibe, Betty’s Espresso will soon play host to a range of local pop-up crafters, designers and artists. In the coming weeks, the Oi!Taco food truck will also kick off a Saturday residency outside, bringing gluten-free tacos and fresh Mexican cuisine to Browning Street.
