Fast five – our takeaway picks for the weekend ahead

Fast five – our takeaway picks for the weekend ahead

We’re almost two-and-a-half months into the pandemic lockdown and the days of going out to eat seem like a fond, but distant, memory. Although restrictions are relaxing and allowing small groups to dine in, takeaway is still the safest and most convenient option for those looking to support cafes, bars and restaurants. While we are doing our best to keep you informed of all of the spots that are making the transition to click-and-collect, we figured we’d put together a quick hit-list of venues to help make your decision-making process easier. Here are our splurge-worthy suggestions …

Mekhong, New Farm: Few cuisines are better suited to chasing away the winter chill than Thai food, and one of the best spots to nab such bone-warming Thai eats is Mekhong on Brunswick Street. The restaurant has done a cracking takeaway and delivery trade while the lockdowns restrictions have been in place – even though dine-in service has recommenced, getting takeaway to enjoy at home remains a real treat. If you’re seeking recommendations, we suggest sampling the incredible kaari puffs, Thai-style spicy chicken wings, massaman curry with slow-cooked beef, red curry with roasted duck and/or spicy stir-fried flat noodles with seasonal greens, egg and Thai herbs. Head to Mekhong’s website to check out the menu and online ordering system.

West End Coffee House, West End: We didn’t intend on double-dipping with the Thai cuisine love, but can you blame us? West End Coffee House’s Thai-infused breakfast and lunch eats are renowned throughout Brisbane, and until we can park ourselves at a table with a cup of Campos coffee and a bowl of fried rice with marinated pulled pork, wok-fried egg and prick nam pal we’ll just settle for takeaway. The cafe has its usual menu of hearty fare up for grabs, including the tofu laab, Thai chicken and noodle soup with poached eggs, Thai-style omelette and more, as well as a daily special. West End Coffee House’s team has been getting creative with these – the likes of egg-and-bacon roti tacos, spicy pork with sticky rice, and poached chicken with aromatic rice are must-try if you happen to spot them on the specials list!

Hôntô, Fortitude Valley: If you are yet to sample Hôntô’s revolutionary modern Japanese fare, use this opportunity to expand your culinary horizons. The restaurant is currently closed for dine-in service, but it has been nailing takeaway. The menu includes Hôntô’s imaginative array of snacks (lobster katsu sando, karaage chicken roll, edamame and avocado dip with lotus root chips), dumplings (shiitake dumplings, pork and vegetable shumai, miso swordfish and potato gyoza), sushi (tempura spanner crab rolls, yellowfin tuna with wasabi mayo), and bigger plates (slow-cooked beef rib, barbecue gochujang pork belly, smoked chicken fried rice). Head to the Hôntô website to browse the takeaway menu, then call the team after 4:00 pm on 07 3193 7392 to place an order.

Fritzenberger, Wilston and Petrie Terrace: National Burger Day has just come and gone, but our love of burgers is a 365-day thing. Fritzenberger gets it, which is why they’ve ensured its selection of killer two-handers and loaded fries are available should our cravings strike. Not only is Fritzenberger’s two currently operating locations (Albany Creek is still closed for the time being) offering takeaway between 12:00–8:00 pm all week, both have a handy delivery service between 5:00–8:00 pm Thursday to Sunday and 12:00–2:00 pm for Friday lunch if you order via Fritzenberger’s app. Between both spots the radius covers a lot of ground, so you should have no problem getting your hands on a signature Fritzen Burger, buttermilk-chicken burger, frites loaded with Fritzensauce and Twisties salt, chicken wings and even a selection of local beer and wine. You can order Fritzenberger from its Wilston or Petrie Terrace spots through Bopple or via its app.
