Turn your Monday blues into midday brews – our day-by-day guide to lunching in The City

If there’s one thing we look forward to during the workday, it’s lunch. For the city dwellers among us, this hour of sweet relief from your inbox and to-do list is also the perfect time to start exploring the wealth of eateries scattered around The City. So you can find the hidden treasures and most delicious eats, we have rounded up some of the best spots to take a breather and a few bites during lunchtime. Now, all you have to do is wait for the clock to strike 12:00 pm …

Monday
If there’s one thing that Monday calls for, it’s coffee. Perched on Charlotte Street is where you’ll stumble upon top-flight caffeine dispensary The Maillard Project. The sister venue to Coffee Anthology, this quaint cafe serves up a truly delicious brunch menu– think sweet picks like French toast with watermelon jam, fresh mango, berries, almond praline, coconut, raspberry-and-mint gel and vanilla ice-cream and savoury menu heroes like mince with free-range pork, hummus, baharat butter, and a tea egg served on ciabatta toast. Pair your eats with a large coffee to go and you’re set up to absolutely slay the week ahead.

Tuesday
Tuesday becomes slightly more tolerable with a feast of Asian-inspired eats, and one of the best places you can snag a feed is LUCHA Kitchen + Bar in Elizabeth Street’s Asian street-food laneway FudoDori. LUCHA shines a spotlight on tea (lucha is Mandarin for ‘green tea’), from grab-and-go takeaway bubble teas to modern Chinese dishes that use various teas as a key ingredient. The venue’s must-try bites include roast chicken with tea leaf-infused dipping sauces, stewed tofu with jasmine tea, wok-fried beef with oyster and tea sauce, and fried king prawns with black tea. Of course, you have to grab a bubble tea to take back to the office – it’s a non-negotiable.

Wednesday
If you’re anything like us, Wednesdays just seem to drag on forever. Those in need of a hump-day treat to tide them through the afternoon can make tracks to Ulster Lane newcomer Cheeky Poké. Perfectly geared to servicing the time-poor crowd, Cheeky Poké is a primo place to secure protein-loaded poke bowls (the likes of salmon, tuna, kingfish, octopus, prawn, chicken, wagyu beef and tofu all grace the menu), wonton tacos and salivation-worthy snacks. Parched folk can sip on thirst-quenching beverages like kombucha and HRVST ST juices, as well as batch-brew coffee from Five Senses – for those who need that extra boost to get them through the day.

Thursday
You’re on the home stretch, friends! You’ve nearly made it through the work week and so we think it’s only fair you treat yourself to a big bowl of ramen. You’ll find only the best at the pint-sized Taro’s Ramen location at 480 Queen Street, where you can also expect speedy service so you don’t overstretch your lunch break. Slurp up spoonfuls of brothy goodness (there are nine different ramen flavours to choose from) as well as mouth-watering sides like chicken karaage and pork gyoza. Guaranteed to make Thursdays even better.

Friday
Since the minute you strolled into the office, you’ve been watching the clock fervently waiting for midday to arrive when bam – you’re free for an hour! Friday lunches are always extra fun when you know that freedom is on the horizon. If you’re keen for an end-of-the-week feed that will please the carb gods, then we suggest strolling to Spanish deli-style tapas bar Alba Bar and Deli on Burnett Lane. Although Alba’s menu is ever changing, you can usually wrap your hands around jam-packed sandwiches or if you’re feeling fancy, you can snack on cheese, olives and charcuterie meats. If you haven’t got too much work to do in the afternoon, we suggest treating yourself to a glass of wine too. It would be rude not to.
