Ben’s Burgers brings the buns in Winn Lane

Ben’s Burgers has officially filled the hole left by much-loved Flamingo Cafe in Winn Lane, and if the bustle at the burger joint this week is anything to go by, it’s filling it well. Ben’s Burgers is the creation of Ben and Nick Chiu, brothers and co-owners of Apartment in Brisbane City and creators of A Love Supreme. The pair wanted to bring a new vibe to the laneway, tangling together their love of streetwear, good beats and excellent eats, creating a place to kick back with a bunch of friends over a few beers.

Tapping into the simplicity of the Japanese approach to life – picking one thing and doing it really well – Ben’s Burgers is offering up a simple menu of three burgers including a classic, a special and a vegetarian option. There are chilli fries, a daily salad and extra trappings like candied bacon to embellish the pared back experience of course, but you could easily keep your burger chowdown a humble, straightforward affair, entrusting the team in its knowledge-driven mission. Ben’s done the leg work too, traipsing all over Melbourne, and Tokyo – think The Great Burger, W.P. Gold Burger, Blacows, Golden Brown – in an effort to nail the perfect assemblage of ingredients.

A hefty beef patty is the base for both the BB Classic and BB Special, with a brioche bun – or gluten-free alternative – bookending beef with cheese, McClure’s pickles, lettuce, tomato, onion, ketchup, mustard and mayo, or cheese, pickles, onion, jalapeños and special sauce respectively. The BB Veg sees parmesan, swiss cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomato, onion and aioli top a whole roasted mushroom. Tomato sauce, mustard and Tabasco can be found on your table, as well as a wad of napkins, which you’ll need to mop up the succulent juices escaping down your wrists. Top off your feast with a gooey brownie or slice of pecan pie, and wash it all down with Burleigh Brewing Co. beer, housemade cherry cola or ginger beer.

Three burgers also make up the breakfast menu. Savoury appetites can opt for a bacon, egg, cheese and special sauce number or a sausage, egg, cheese and bourbon barbecue sauce creation, while those with a hankering for all things sweet will enjoy the epic BB Elvis – bacon, peanut butter, banana and maple syrup. Toasted brioche comes topped with nutella, nutella and peanut butter, peanut butter and jelly, cheese, or avocado, mint and feta. Coffee beans are sourced from Coffee Supreme and there’s a green smoothie to even the score of all that ‘health’.

As for the fit-out, some ever-talented locals put their heads together to bring the blue-and-white glory to life. Ben and Nick’s sister Allana Chiu was the architect on the project, collaborating with interior designer Georgia Cannon and the clever lads behind Standing By Co. to pull it all together, while Scott Forbes of Forbes House was brought on to handpaint the lettering inside.

Oh and, don’t worry Flamingo loyalists, the menu still sports some fun milkshakes to cure your milky cravings.
