Bass Espresso coffee house opens in West End
The water bowl left outside for thirsty pups hints at the sense of community that forms Bass Espresso’s core. Add an open invitation to local musicians and artists, and you’ve got a pretty good inkling of the big hearts behind the new venture. Filling the floorboards vacated by The Language People bookshop, Bass Espresso – that’s the instrument, not the fish – is a hub of quality eats, organic drinks and good vibes.
Housed in a light-filled cottage on Boundary Street, Bass Espresso is bringing specialty coffee, organic tea and a side serving of soul to a peaceful patch of West End. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to linger long after you’ve drained your Tanzanian single-origin 75% hot chocolate. Fill a cup with green sencha, ginger zing or dandylicious tea, try the cafe’s own single-origin or decaf coffee, or boost the heart rate with Fifth Battery beans from Fortitude Valley’s famed Brother Espresso. If the extensive milk options don’t satisfy, visitors can even BYO their own milk of choice.
Hungry bellies can be sated with a range of nibbles, from vegetarian lasagne and quiche lorraine to chocolate brownies, blackberry crumble slice or a cheeky friand. Music runs thick through the veins of Bass Espresso, with owner Glenn Holliday (a double bassist in the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra) even crafting custom furniture pieces to mimic his muse. Local musicians will provide a live soundtrack from 1:00 pm every Saturday – stay tuned to the cafe’s Facebook page for updates. Bass Espresso will eventually spread its wings next door and out the back, creating more nooks for guests to while away a lazy afternoon.
