Proving that not even a pandemic can dampen a pastry lover’s need for pie, Banjo’s Bakery’s arrival is a bright spot in an otherwise drab and downcast state of affairs for Brisbane’s hospitality scene. While many cafes, bars and restaurants are closing to weather the storm of the coronavirus, Banjo’s is actually opening its first Brisbane location – the first in a wave of four new Banjo’s stores coming to Queensland this year. The Banjo’s brand has been operating for more than three decades, emerging and flourishing in Tasmania before expanding to boast more than 40 stores nationwide. Folks that go bonkers for Banjo’s rave about the bakery’s substantial range of signature pies, sausage rolls and sweets – starting with its famed Tasmanian scallop pie, double-cheeseburger pie and chicken-parmigiana pie. Now, carb-craving customers can sink their chompers into some flaky pastries without having to get out of the car. That’s right – this new Banjo’s location boasts its own drive-through.

Unfortunately due to the restrictions in place on Brisbane’s eateries, the full-service dine-in cafe component of Banjo’s Bakery it not currently operating. However, the bakery and cafe’s full menu is available to take away, via the drive-through window or ordered for delivery via Uber Eats. The Banjo’s savoury menu includes plenty of pies (don’t worry – you can still get a true-blue meat pie if the more obscure options aren’t your thing), rolls (sausage, spinach and ricotta, veggie), grilled sandwiches (Philly cheesesteak and barbecue pulled-pork and slaw), breakfast croissants, brioche brekkie buns, sandwiches, pitas and wraps. Those with a penchant for sweet treats can also stock up on custard scrolls, scones, cakes, slices, danishes, muffins and hot cross buns. That’s not even including the breads and coffee offering – it’s a selection so large we’re breathless just rattling the items off. Most importantly, Banjo’s Bakery is also selling a range of dinner options – quick meals for the time poor or those that can’t be bothered fighting over the final can of tinned tomatoes at the supermarket.
