Let the vino flow at Fortitude Valley’s new wine bar Baedeker
When news came down the grapevine of a swanky new wine bar from the team behind Grape Therapy, we immediately sat up and took notice. Baedeker is a worldly watering hole that handpicks top drops from some of the finest wineries around the globe and serves them up inside an eclectic setting inspired by the romance of travel. If you’ve been looking for a reason to drink riesling, have been pining for a pinot or chomping at the bit for a chardonnay – Baedeker is perfect for those that like to make pour decisions.
As an accomplished importer of fine wines from around the world, Grape Therapy’s Darren Davis is probably one of the most knowledgeable noses in the wine business. It was almost for this reason alone that our tastebuds were so excited to find out that Darren and Wine & Dine’m Catering’s Craig Fox had linked up to open Baedeker – one of Brisbane’s most impressive emporiums for all sorts of reds, whites and champagnes. Situated in a gorgeous heritage-listed building on Constance Street, Baedeker is a multi-faceted venue that is one part wine bar, one part coffee haunt, one part wine retailer and one part function venue. Baedeker’s decor is complementary to the rustic, old-world aesthetic of the building, which is inspired by the romance of travel (the venue was named after travel-guide pioneer Karl Baedeker). Elements have been constructed from recycled timber and decorative touches such as vintage suitcases, brass deer ornaments and antique furniture create a lived-in, worldly vibe. Fans of secret details will be tickled to know that a bookcase at the bar’s rear opens up into a secret function room and cellar that seats 18 – perfect for incognito gatherings.
The global influence extends far beyond Baedeker’s decor – Darren has sourced coveted vintages from all over the world through his extensive travels abroad. Drops from Spain, Italy, France, the United States and more have been sourced to stock the shelves, as well as a concise beer and spirits offering. We know what you are thinking – what’s wine without cheese? Don’t fret mes amies! Baedeker will soon be serving up cheese and charcuterie to complement your drop of choice. If you find a wine that you can’t stop sipping, take a bottle home with you. All wines you sample at the bar are available to purchase and take home from Baedeker’s retail portion, which shares space at the venue’s Constance Street entrance with a handy coffee nook. The coming months will see Baedeker expand further with an exquisitely landscaped champagne garden (serving the full range of Louis Roederer champagne) and a sizeable functions space that can cater to more than 100 patrons.
Baedeker is now open for those looking to uncork and unwind. Find out more details over in the Stumble Guide.
