Snags aside, celebrate Australia Day with lamingtons

If you’re partial to a themed party, then we expect you’ve already decked out your (blow-up) pool area with Australian flags, gassed-up the barbecue and have green and gold zinc at the ready for this Saturday’s celebrations.

While snags in bread, steak burgers and beer are usually on the menu, the Australian dessert side of things can often get forgotten. Actually baking pavlova and Anzac biscuits may be rendered in the too-hard-basket when the tension of Triple J’s countdown is consuming your mind, so we’ve put together a little list of classic bakeries about town where you can pick up that other favourite, the lamington, for dessert.

Gerbino’s Pasticceria and Bakery at Kelvin Grove does a lamington that is dense yet fluffy, a perfect ratio of sponge cake to coconut to ganache. Triple B Bakery in Mitchelton sees giant lamingtons join the list, while Mr T’s Bakery over in Grange also serves up a mean coconut rolled number. On the opposite side of the river, drop by Oxford Street Bakery in Bulimba or, alternatively, Poppy Cakes in Brisbane City and Fortitude Valley is doing a limited-edition Lamington Cupcake that you can preorder for the big day.
