Arty interiors intrigue at Lucky Duck and Ponycat
A cafe’s appearance can make or break whether a caffeine-thirsty wanderer decides to pop in or keep trekking for their morning cup of joe. But when colourful, artistic eye candy vibrantly peeks out the door from the inner abode, curiosity alone will pull you in. Bringing street-art styles inside, these two Brisbane cafes will have you raring for a seat before you’ve even seen the menu.
Lucky Duck Espresso
This bright and bubbly Highgate Hill cafe has been known for keeping things simple. But with dishes like garlic butter mushrooms with ricotta, spinach and a free-range egg on organic sourdough and the Kings sourdough sandwich of bacon, eggs, avocado, tomato and haloumi (both $12.50), we’d say the menu is actually bit fancy, minus the price tag. Serving up West End-based Blackstar Coffee among a bright and energetic artful interior, Lucky Duck Espresso is a vibrant welcoming breakfast/lunch nook. Sip the famous Canadian Bomb Milkshake with espresso, maple syrup, banana and chocolate, while gazing about their art-filled laneway outside.
The Ponycat
A popular spot for an all-day breakfast, Fortitude Valley’s The Ponycat is mixing mediums all over the walls. With bright painted creations on one wall, their signature ponycat drawing on another and a stenciled sign out the front, these guys really like a bit of street inside. With eggs served all hours, plus an extensive lunch menu, you can pull up a lounge, browse the bacon-free menu and relax into a book. No book? The walls will keep your moseying eye busy. Try a bucket coffee – it will keep you buzzing for hours.
