Puzzles and potions (of the alcoholic kind) at Brisbane’s newest basement bar

If you dominated at Cluedo as a kid and/or possess expert sleuthing abilities, Brisbane’s newest immersive experience could very well pique your interest. Officially opening its doors this week, Arcadium Adventures lures you down a dark staircase to discover a realm of magic and mystery as well as boozy beverages and a brand new basement bar.

If walls could talk, the 19th-century heritage-listed Espie Dods House on Wickham Terrace would have one heck of a tale to tell. Formerly the office and residence of Doctor Espie Dods, the old girl has seen a few incarnations over the years including a few different bars and restaurants but it’s the most recent incarnation that is undoubtedly the most intriguing. Created by Gabrielle Lim – one of the masterminds behind Melbourne’s Trapt Bar & Escape Rooms – it’s fair to say Arcadium Adventures is not your run-of-the-mill escape room but rather an immersive experience that utilises augmented reality to create a whole new world. There are currently two unique experiences on offer – a Realm of Magic and a Realm of Mystery with a third, Realm of Fantasy set to open later this year. Each of the adventures have been inspired by stories from across the world – from Arthurian Legend to Roman and Chinese Mythology, Victorian-era fiction to Egyptian Mythology. Each adventure is connected through an overarching narrative that will continue to unfold in the future.

Right, onto the specifics. Teams of two to six players have 50-minutes to retrieve relics and analyse artefacts, solve puzzles and unravel mysteries. For those that successfully retrieve the artefacts, you’re invited to join the Order of Arcadium, which unlocks access to a special range of treats at the bar (just to provide a little extra incentive). The speakeasy seats 40 and is open to the public, so even if you’re not embarking on an epic adventure this time around, you can still settle in and enjoy the magic and whimsy that is weaved throughout the entire experience. As for the beverages, there’s a selection of locally brewed beers, spirits and a swag of specialty cocktails inspired by each of the experiences. Top tip – sip the Sanguis Dragonis, which features Brookie’s slow gin, Aperol, lime juice and ginger beer. Adventure awaits at Arcadium – jump over here to make a booking or take a peek at our Stumble Guide for opening times.

The Stumble Guide is our comprehensive Brisbane dining guide with more than 2400 places to eat, drink, shop and play.
