About a Boy and a Girl brings wholefoods and natural wine to Newstead

It’s a dilemma we all face from time to time – we want to eat well, but what’s the point if it tastes like cardboard? Bringing together the collective minds of a nutritionist and a hospitality veteran, Newstead’s About a Boy and a Girl is here to prove that eating well doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice fun and flavour.

You’ll find About a Boy and a Girl in amongst the warehouses of Proe Street in Newstead – what sets it apart is the sun-warmed seats and sprouting garden beds out the front. It is the brainchild of Jodi Lanchester and Steve Hazlett who, through Jodi’s background as a nutritionist and Steve’s extensive knowledge from years owning and managing restaurants and bars, have pulled together their combined love and understanding of good food and drink. Looking to create a space that celebrated wholefoods at their best, the couple created market and cafe About a Boy and a Girl.

Jodi and Steve have hand selected every item in About a Boy and a Girl’s market. Lining the shelves you’ll find an abundance of specialty items (gluten free, dairy free, vegan and more) and certified organic products, from dry goods to skin care and everything in between. The fridges are filled with the likes of Luz Almond products, 4Real Milk, Coyo and locally made water kefir. More products will come as customers grow, and the couple encourages special requests (so don’t be afraid to tell them about that killer kombucha you love!). Steve has also curated a stellar selection of wines, beers, cider and spirits, all of which are either natural, certified organic, certified biodynamic, preservative free, gluten free, or vegan – but also amazing to drink. We’re talking the likes of Shobbrook Wines, Commune of Buttons, Louis Roederer, Newstead Brewing Co., Green Beacon and more. The cafe offers a wholesome all-day menu, using a number of products found in the market and herbs from its garden. The produce is predominantly organic, sustainable, ethical and local, with seasonal ingredients a key driver of the ever-changing menu. You might find such deliciousness as corn fritters with salmon gravlax, house-made frittatas, or Asian-style pulled beef burgers on any given day.
