Schnitties, sangas and smoothies – 480 Queen completes its food offering
Following hot on the heels of the openings of Otto Brisbane and Taro’s Ramen, 480 Queen is unveiling its full list of dining spots, bringing a range of tastes to the table. Hofer & Frei, Not Another Sandwich, The Daily Hit, Shuji Sushi and Nectar Cafe will make the Room Four Eighty Precinct a popular pit stop for lunch pick-me-ups.
Leave the tinned tuna, cup ‘o’ soup and soggy sandwiches at home next week – lunch is sorted. 480 Queen has been teasing us with its drip-fed schedule of announcements for its dining openings, and now it has opened the floodgates and is bombarding us with a wave of new spots to try. Head up the stairs off Queen Street or enter up on Adelaide Street and follow your nose to the bustling Room Four Eighty Precinct on level two. Here you will find several charming destinations that are shaking up the staid lunchtime options that the city is known for by offering something fresh and exciting. New eateries include Hofer & Frei, The Daily Hit, Not Another Sandwich, Necta Espresso Bar and Terra Firma Bistro (joining OTTO, Taro’s Ramen and Jimmy Rod’s Shave Saloon Bar & Kitchen) – launching officially on Monday August 15, but are serving lunch now!
Hofer & Frei is an espresso and schnitzel joint that is serving up delicious Bavarian bites for breakfast and lunch. Ricardo Basetti and Pando Cafe’s Matthew Medcraf have created a menu that offers a middle ground between cheap and unsatisfying meals and expensive restaurant fare. The protein (chicken, beef, fish or vegetarian) at Hofer & Frei is dipped and crumbed with a mixture of herbs and pan-fried to order, then placed between burger buns or within a wrap and served with crunchy chips. Must-try signature combinations include the Tejano (schnitzel with cheddar cheese, cos lettuce, grilled onions, jalapenos, Boston pickles and honey mustard mayo) and The Arnie (schnitty with Swiss cheese, avocado, slow roast tomatoes, and Hofer’s sweet chilli mayo). Hofer & Frei also offers a selection of salads, breakfast toasties, coffee from Toby’s Estate, gluten-free options, as well as milkshakes and ice-cream.
Around the corner sits a double-whammy offering from Mel Moubarak – Not Another Sandwich and The Daily Hit. Hatch & Co. executive chef Craig Wright has put together a lunch offering that is sure to satisfy – fresh Vietnamese baguettes stuffed with slow-roasted meat, served with salads and condiments. Think helpings of lamb shoulder, beef shin or slow roasted lamb in a freshly baked roll with flavoursome condiments, or a delicious roast carrot and quinoa salad to go. Not Another Sandwich makes rolls fresh to order, but also serves grab-and-go pre-made sandwiches and jaffles in the morning, as well as coffee from Wolff Coffee Roasters (including the cold-press nitro coffee off tap). The Daily Hit is a great spot to jump-start your system with a cold-pressed juice or smoothie. Not only can you quench your thirst with some inventive concoctions (the Krazy Kale with pineapple and jalapeno is refreshingly zesty), but The Daily Hit also serves fresh fruit, protein bars, boosters, kombucha, yoghurt cups and brekkie bowls, with bone broth soups soon to be added to the menu.
