World Science Festival Brisbane: The art of science – Exploring the science behind botanical art (Display)

Art and science have long been held to be separate disciplines. A closer examination, however, reveals significant connections between the two. In fact, the goals and motivations of art and science are essentially equivalent. Both attempt to make sense of the world around us, although the methods used to communicate and describe this vision may differ. And both are used to create order and predictability.

Botanical Art workshops at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coot-tha combine both disciplines within the one session, with the science behind the art an essential component of the artistic experience. On display is a collection of botanical art workshop pieces from our workshop program, together with the science underpinning the work. Whether it’s painting plant cells as viewed under a microscope, exploring the impact of chemical mordants on plant dyes or using leaf vein patterns to create filigree leaf art, there is something in this display that will appeal to your inner artist and scientist.

Location: Meet at the Auditorium.
