Velvet Helmet presents Spring Fling

Velvet Helmet presents Spring Fling

You are invited to experience, Velvet Helmet – Brisbane’s favourite cabaret variety night on Wednesday September 16. The guest programmer for this event is the talented Miss Jennifer Bismire, who orchestrated the popular June event, “Space Oddities’. Bismire is a theatre designer/director/installation artist/puppeteer/chef/music dabbler who has worked with Macnas Puppet Theatre, Snuff Puppets, Motherboard Productions, Anywhere Theatre Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, La Boite, FAST, Brisbane Festival, Metro Arts and Melbourne International Comedy Festival – to name a few. This month Velvet Helmet welcomes Bismire, packing a brand new vision, to get the crowd up and dancing.

The theme for ‘Spring Fling’ is inspired by American bandstand, Dick Clark, Hairspray the Musical, Corny Collins show, 50’s and 60’s dance parties, Buddy Holly, Elvis, Jersey Boys, prom night, old school rock’n’roll, big hair, bigger dresses, shortening skirts, blue suits, swing dancing, the beginnings of a sexual revolution and the freedom in teenagers, barber shop quartets and shiny, shiny shoes, the political implications of the time – the brand new media and television networks and teenagers aiding the path towards integration. We can smell revolution.

You can expect the usual Velvet Helmet format, with the first act being a traditional line-up of edgy and provocative works from the Velvet Helmet artists’ stable. The second half will feature some amazing swing and Americana musical acts and an impromptu rock’n’roll swing dance workshop – so you can expect to dance the night away. Keep in mind, dress-ups are an absolute must. Rockabilly darlings, swing dance aficionados, your time in the spotlight is now. Head to the Velvet Helmet Facebook page for updates  or visit the website for more information.
