The Remainder utilises communicative debris left as technology becomes outmoded (at an increasing pace), to bring lost, ephemeral connections into a material realm. In using reclaimed industrial and household materials that highlight broad social and environmental implications, disregarded objects imbued with history are humanised; given their own agency to connect with audience and each other.

Drawing on the philosophies of New Materialism, Hawkins uses sculpture, installation and sound to unravel the dynamic between human and object, recognising how objects are increasingly relied upon to enable communication and connection between people.
