The Kidney
Thought-provoking Viennese dark comedy, The Kidney, is a first for Brisbane and also a chance to show local audiences that Germans DO indeed have a sense of humour.
The Kidney is being staged as part of 2022 Fringe Brisbane at Stafford’s Hayward Street Theatre by first-time producers Lachlan Mitcherson and Nina Pavlovic.
The play has also never been performed in Australia or in English before. It is written by award-winning Austrian Stefan Vögel, known for his dark comedies that sell-out in performances across Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
The Kidney is about Arnold, a successful architect who is meant to be celebrating the biggest achievement of his career when his wife Kate reveals that she is in need of a new kidney. The evening derails when Arnold, along with his neighbours, debate just ‘how far would you go for your loved ones?’
‘I adore this play – not only is it an exceptional comedy but it’s also a great conversation starter about how far would you go for love,’ says Mitcherson.
‘I first saw this play in Vienna four years ago and I still haven’t been able to stop talking about it,’ says German-born Pavlovic.
‘This show makes you feel as if you’re on stage unraveling the story alongside the characters; it is funny, provocative and leaves you with an abundance of topics to dissect afterwards. My ideal theatre experience.’
‘Producing a play is way more nerve-wracking than I would have expected, however it is an absolute blast being able to bring something fresh to the stage,’ said Mitcherson.
PERFORMANCES: Thursday 27 October through to Saturday 5 November Hayward Street Theatre, Stafford
