The Bluebird Mechanicals
The Bluebird Mechanicals is a strange, intense and wonderful contemporary solo performance work inspired by the aftermath of Chekhov’s The Seagull and the Hindenburg disaster, about feeling coming back in when you are stuck, have failed and are witness to the destruction of the natural world, unmoved. Something we all have in common right now, in a way.
It attempts to bring the historical into the frame of this contemporary moment. If Donald Trump can even exist, then maybe we are on a cusp, much like 1937, when the Hindenburg burst into flames and sent the world careening towards disaster.
Caught behind glass, a couple makes small talk even though one of them is dead, shot himself in the head. Until one of them wakes up, running through the woods, guided by an owl, haunted by one.
A Russian woman has something to say, she can see the future in the past and wants to tell you what it’s all about.
The Hindenburg careens towards disaster. A tap dancer dances so frantic her feet hurt.
We’re all in this together. Sing a song! Dance along!
