Tangerine

Tangerine

Hot Chicks with Big Brains are stoked to present the latest venture: a feminist + queer film discussion podcast called Screen Queens! (It’ll be out next week.) To coincide with this we’ve started a bimonthly movie night in collaboration with Palace Cinemas, The Barracks and Brisbane Film Collective.

First up is Tangerine! This will be the first ever Queensland screening of the film.

Sean Baker’s Tangerine is bold, hilarious, and brutally honest. Shot entirely on an iPhone 5, this film is groundbreaking, not just from a technical perspective, but also in the themes and issues it explores. Tangerine follows two transgender sex workers, Sin-Dee and Alexandra, on their quest to track down Sin-Dee’s cheating boyfriend. It’s also an incredibly original and wonderfully refreshing look into the lives of trans women of colour and trans sex workers, and the film never loses its gorgeous electricity, even in the most poignant moments. Featuring striking debut performances from trans actresses Kitana Kiki Rodriquez and Mya Taylor, Tangerine is a film well on its way to achieving cult status.
