Talking Ideas: Meet Munjed Al Muderis
At this Talking Ideas, hear the incredible true story of an Iraqi refugee who became an internationally-celebrated surgeon. The life of Australian-based Associate Professor Munjed Al Muderis has been filled with heartbreak and hope. Following on from his best-selling memoir Walking Free, Munjed now comes to Brisbane to share the next chapter of an extraordinary journey, Going Back.
Walking Free described Munjed’s escape from Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, his terrifying sea journey to Australia and the brutal mandatory detention he endured on Christmas Island. The memoir also detailed his early work as a pioneering orthopaedic surgeon in osseointegration,(using titanium implants and robotic limbs to restore mobility in amputees) at the cutting edge of medicine.
At State Library of Queensland, you’ll hear from Munjed about his emotional return to Iraq, 18 years after he left. At the invitation of the Iraqi government, Munjed used his medical techniques to change the lives of injured soldiers, police and civilians who had lost limbs through the horrific war against ISIS.
In Going Back, Munjed shares first-hand stories of the people he helped and the lives he forever changed, told through his unique perspective as a former refugee returning to his homeland.
