Susan Faludi

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Susan Faludi sits down with Paul Barclay, presenter and series producer of Big Ideas on ABC RN, to share her sometimes funny, sometimes painful and always poignant investigation into identity as she wrote In the Darkroom a memoir centring on her father’s gender reassignment and a family history in Hungary under Nazi occupation.

In the summer of 2004, Susan learned that her 76-year-old father – long estranged and living in Hungary – had undergone sex reassignment surgery. How was this new parent, who claimed to be ‘a complete woman now’ connected to the silent, explosive and ultimately violent father that she had known, the photographer who’d built his career on the alteration of images?
