Supernormal Stimuli

Supernormal Stimuli

Vibrantly disrupted, Supernormal Stimuli comes to Petrie Terrace.

MELT Portrait Prize finalist Christopher R. Inwood is tackling enormous symbolism in miniature-scale when his exhibition, Supernormal Stimuli opens at Third Quarter Gallery on 5 July.

Featuring 21 vivid portraits, painted in Inwood’s signature hyperrealist style, this exhibition is a daring curation that blends complex ideology and tongue-in-cheek social commentary with ease.

Inwood’s exceptional technical skill has firmly secured his place as one of Brisbane’s most promising portrait artists, with consecutive showings at Brisbane Street Art Festival and MELT: Portrait Prize.

Supernormal Stimuli opens a conversation about what happens when manufactured iconography and nature collide. Here, delicately painted songbirds hatch enormous Spalding basketballs and society’s most powerful figures are disarmed by the expansive blue-skies that drift lazily across the space where a face should be.

In a world where we increasingly demand more of the ordinary, and look to filter and enhance our reality – this exhibition is a quiet, beautifully executed reminder that bigger is not always better.

Supernormal Stimuli runs from 5–11 July, at Third Quarter Gallery, Petrie Terrace. Individual works will be priced at $290, and will be available for pre-sale from 28 June.
