Singout Sista presents Emily Wurrumara & Black Smoke + The Verandah ChiX

You are invited to experience a concert like no other, dedicated to showcasing the voices of Indigenous Australia and the South Sea Islands. The talented Emily Wurrumara & Black Smoke, and Brisbane-based female vocal ensemble The Verandah ChiX will take the stage to lead you on a journey to an empowering atmosphere.

This is something special, and bound to grab the attention of those in the know. With Emily Wurramara, a young woman who has been writing songs since she was 6 who will sing in both English and Annandilyakwa, the traditional language of her home, Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory. Emily is both a prolific song-writer and multi-instrumentalist. Joined by Saraima Navara on guitar and backing vocals, and Yarum, a Garawa / Mununjali / Badjtala cultural performer, on didgeridoo and tapsticks, they are Black Smoke.

The Verandah ChiX is a Brisbane-based female vocal ensemble, whose origins come from the Torres Strait Islands, Aboriginal Australia, South Sea Islands, Papua New Guinea, France/Israel, South Africa, and Polynesian Islands. These women teach their traditional languages to each other to share as one unique voice to the world. From humble beginnings of lunchtime singing on the verandah of the old School of Arts Building, Brisbane, The Verandah ChiX have performed at the Teneriffe Festival 2014, Parliament House, NAIDOC Week, Pacifika Film Festival and for the G20 Cultural Celebrations.

Take a journey and experience the diversity of stunning female ‘voices’ featured in our Singout Sista concert series, celebrating the strength, beauty and creativity of women in music.
