Festival 2018 presents See My Story, a powerful exhibition focusing on the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. The artwork focuses on the exploration of identity, fortitude and memory, commemorating the diversity and the cultural pride.

See My Story presents a special collection of artworks produced by young people who have been associated with the Youth Justice system and spent time at the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre or Cleveland Youth Detention Centre in Townsville. The artworks were created with the assistance of Artists-in-Residence Aunty Nancy Torrens, Rory Houston and Brett Parker to create bright and expressive pieces that emphasises a journey of discovery. An artist-in-residence project provides young people in detention, as well as those who have come in contact with the justice system, the perfect opportunity to express their identity and gives them a chance to get creative.

Primarily using acrylic paint, the artists have combined dots, lines, symbols and cross hatching on a variety of surfaces to portray the unique art style of Aboriginal paintings that have become increasingly popular over the last decade. This style of painting is used as a contemporary representation of the Aboriginal culture, and provides a chance to see a modern interpretation of this style.

Art has the ability to transcend time and space – See My Story is a prime example of artists expressing freedom and cultural connection through creative means. The exhibition is proudly produced by the Department of Youth Justice, supported by Queensland Performing Arts Centre and the Office of the Commonwealth Games, Queensland Government.

See My Story is a reflection spiritual connection to Country, people and place, fitting perfectly with the celebration of The Commonwealth Games.
