Rag Rugs Workshop

Looking for a new eco-friendly craft skill this year? Come along and learn how to make your own rag rug from scratch using second hand fabric. You will be guided every knot of the way by local Brisbane designer and sustainability advocate, Naomi, AKA The Sewloist.

Join Naomi as she guides you through the technique of making rugs from up-cycled fabric and remnants. Using only a safety pin and strips of fabric you will each make the beginnings of a Rag Rug. Making Rag Rugs is a great way to up-cycle bed linen and to make use of your fabric stash.

We will provide a selection of fabrics to work with the during the Workshop however you are encouraged to bring your own lightweight woven Cottons (including bed sheets and pillowcases) that can be torn into long strips to make your very own Rag Rug*.

Meet the Maker: Naomi is a Brisbane-based designer who spends much time in her West End Studio designing and making for her creative business, The Sewloist. Having worked in fashion for many years Naomi has become a passionate advocate for sustainable practices within the clothing and textiles industry. She loves encouraging people’s self-expression through creativity and is a big believer in making personal connections to our garments and belongings so as to value them more. Naomi has created The Sewloist with intention to connect with people, foster community and to provide an alternative to fast fashion + fast consumption. Having collected MANY beautiful fabrics over the years from independent sellers, The Sewloist clothing range exclusively incorporates remnant and vintage fabrics into all designs. It is Naomi’s intention to only use fabrics which are already in circulation with the aim of being as sustainable as possible.

*This workshop gives you the starting point and techniques for making this style of Rag Rug, however the process of completing your own rug will take more than 2 hours. This means that you will be taking your project home with you to complete.
