Othello

Othello

Strap in for Shakespearian epic of betrayal, jealousy and revenge – Othello is coming to Bille Brown Theatre from September 10 to October 1. Adapted by renowned theatre veterans Jimi Bani and Jason Klarwein, this classic production has been given a thrilling twist. Forget the Ottoman-Venetian War – this reimagined tale sees Captain Othello leading his Torres Strait battalion to protect the coast of Far North Queensland as the Imperial Japanese Navy encroaches on Australia. That’s not Othello’s only concern – he has secretly married the daughter of a wealthy cane farmer, and her spurned suitor is plotting his revenge against the captain.

This gripping tri-lingual (Kala Lagaw Ya, Yumpla Tok and English) production will also showcase a sometimes forgotten part of Australia’s history, illuminating the vital role of the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion during World War II. The conflict saw 800 Torres Strait Islanders – including Jimi Bani’s grandfather and great grandfather – sign up to protect the northern tip of Australia. The infusion of Othello with the history of the battalion brings together two powerful artistic cultures — Shakespeare and Wagadagam — creating an unforgettable and unmissable theatre experience.
