Northey Street Winter Solstice Festival
Join in the celebration of the shortest day of the year at Northey Street City Farm. With a ceremony, lantern parade, bonfire, great organic food, kids’ space, musical performances, music, activities and much much more. The celebration of the Winter Solstice is a midwinter event, marking the shortest day and the longest night of the year. In many cultures the midwinter festival was the last feast before the deep winter. Ancient cultures across the world have marked the rebirth of sunlight after the darkest period of the year through a ceremony. It is a symbolic opportunity to recognise rebirth and new beginnings.
The Winter Solstice Festival at Northey Street City Farm is an invitation to join in community, reflect, reconnect and renew, in celebration and ceremony. To consider what no longer serves us, what we wish to let go, and what we would like to take forward into the new sun’s phase of the year. The Winter Solstice Festival is always an event to remember and an opportunity to collectively let go of unwanted energy, to welcome new positive futures for us all and celebrate together as community.
The Children’s Area will hold activities such as earth arts and lantern making, face painting permaculture style, Blueberry the Clown, creative writing and The Punch and Judy Ramyana puppet show. The Busker Stage will see performances from the likes of Virginia Sook, Daryl James, Old Semeil and Tom Smith whilst Mamiko, Zvonsky and Fat Picnic will be seen on the lawn and on the Mango Main Stage. For those wanting to get their hands dirty there will also be workshops on subtropical trees, native bee diversity and recycled homes as well as bush foods, social permaculture and seed saving.
