NAB AFL Women Brisbane Lions V Collingwood

The Brisbane Lions are set to host Collingwood Magpies at Hickey Park in round 6 of the NAB AFL Women’s Competition.

Footy fans have watched on as four new teams were welcomed to the competition expanding the league to 14 teams: Gold Coast SUNS, Richmond, St Kilda and West Coast Eagles.

The success of AFLW over the past four years continues to inspire girls and women to play footy, driving a 31% increase in female football participation across all levels of the game last year. Participation has grown consistently; since 2014 participation has grown from 195,000 participants to over 580,000.

Played from February to April, AFLW matches are well attended by football fans in support of their favourite teams or athletes. Superstars such as Tayla Harris, Katie Brennan, Daisy Pearce and Erin Phillips will take the field this year, while a further 147 players will prepare to make their debut in 2020.

The eight-week home and away season will be followed by a three-week finals series, with the NAB AFLW Grand Final scheduled for Sat 18 April.

Four seasons old and still breaking the mould – the 2020 NAB AFL Women’s Competition is set to push the boundaries yet again for what it means for women in sport.
