But My Mum Says I’m Cool – Art Show by Andie McGovern

Andie McGovern is hosting a viewing of her 32-piece Simpsons-inspired sculpture series ‘But My Mum Says I’m Cool’ at Suburban Social Neighbourhood Bar & Kitchen. Two thirds of the bar/restaurant will be set aside for interested art lovers to move about this exhibition, with Andie herself being on-site for the evening to discuss the pieces throughout the night.

Andie McGovern is a contemporary, multi-disciplinary artist whose main art forms consist of sculpture, illustration and installation. Amongst other things, being pigeonholed as a millennial has proven to be useful inspiration with most of her artwork relating to subject matters explored within pop culture.

Although Andie has been making art since she was a child, it is only in the last 12 months that she has had a presence in the Brisbane arts scene. Andie explains, “I am a child of the nineties and like many kids of that era I loved watching TV before and after school”.

That exposure during childhood has and continues to influence many of her works. This influence can be seen most notably in her latest work ‘But my mum says I’m cool’, a 32 piece sculpture series involving The Simpsons subject matter, exploring each character’s vices, addiction and the perception that surrounds it.

This two and a half year project wraps up its second show in its hometown of Brisbane, Australia before being taken abroad in November 2018. This will see Andie exhibiting across three shows in New York, including global arts programs; Raw Artists and Conception Arts as well as her third solo exhibit ‘But My Mum Says I’m Cool’.

To support this local artist, Suburban Social Neighbourhood Bar & Kitchen is showcasing her work for her second and final show in Brisbane. Limited edition signed prints, stickers and badges will be available for purchase on the night. Andie will also be putting together a Simpson themed raffle with prizes including one of a kind pieces such as Bobo the bear, a Lisa Lionheart doll and Piggy cufflinks. All proceeds will go toward the costs of her trip, including a gold coin donation to see the show.

Please note, Suburban Social’s normal food and beverage offerings will also be available to purchase on the night, those who don’t wish to participate will still be able to sit and dine separately.
