Mapping the Quiet Mind

Mapping the Quiet Mind

Ross Byers third major solo exhibition Mapping the Quiet Mind unveils the inner workings of the artist’s mind, exhibiting from Wednesday October 28 to Sunday November 1. Byers has developed the philosophical and conceptual underpinnings of this work over the past three years. Influences range from Alain De Botton whom Byers refers to as the ‘people’s philosopher’, as well as leading current literature exploring the field of neuroscience and extends to Robert Macfarlane’s Mountains of the Mind which investigates cultural history, geology and perceptions of landscape. The quiet mind is an honest and personal place, a place that in a busy and overscheduled world is seldom visited consciously, but exists nonetheless. Byers meanders through such territory to fabricate and map out the kinds of vessels required to negotiate this internal landscape or architecture of the mind. The vessels he has created produce an intricate visual play, soothing both the eye and state of mind of the viewer.

Curator Ellie Lea Pagram and catalogue essayist Jess Panday bring additional voices to the exhibition, both being passionate about and intimately familiar with Byers work. The official Opening Event is set to feature the musical talent of Brisbane duo Rob Davidson and Alice Night and prelude the soulful and resonant sounds of their soon to be released first collaborative album Trigger. Artworks on show exemplify a mid-career artist who has honed his craft, showcasing a blend of technical skill and creative process producing a variety of works in scale and materials, ranging from intuitive and poetic drawings to dynamic and intricate wooden sculpture reflecting Byers educational foundations in Art, Fine Furniture and Design. Mapping the Quiet Mind exhibition runs from the 28th of October to the 1st of November with the official Opening Event taking place 6pm Friday the 30th of October in White Canvas Gallery located at 26 Church St, Fortitude Valley.
