John Waters Movie Fest

John Waters Movie Fest

Kristian Fletcher brings back Brisbane’s official John Waters Movie Fest for a second big year! The festival is screening in an underground retro cinema, perfect for such an event!

The fest launches with the Queensland premiere of the newly-restored Multiple Maniacs (1970) on the Wednesday. Before Pink Flamingos rocked the midnight circuit in 1972, John Waters brought New Line Cinema his print of a black ‘n’ white film he had made two years earlier. Considered a rarity, the film has been remastered and looks better than ever.

The Cavalcade of Perversion is a travelling show put on by a troupe of misfits whose shocking proclivities are topped only by those of their leader: the glammer-than-glam, larger-than-life Divine, who’s out for blood after discovering her lover’s affair. Also starring Edith Massey (The Egg Lady), Mink Stole and the usual assortment of Dreamlanders.

On Sunday , spend the afternoon with more John Waters movies. Screening at 1:30 pm is Pecker (1998),  wherein a talented young photographer who enjoys snapping photos of his satirical, perverted Baltimore neighbourhood and his wacky family, gets dragged into a world of pretentious artists from New York City and finds newfound fame. The film stars Edward Furlong and Christina Ricci.

The movie is followed by Polyester in ODORAMA (1981), back by popular demand. A suburban housewife’s world falls apart when her pornographer husband admits he’s been unfaithful to her, her daughter gets pregnant, and her son is suspected of being a violent foot-fetishist… Starring Divine and Tab Hunter, be sure to bring your ODORAMA card from home or purchase one with your ticket!*
