Home Turf Art exhibition

Home Turf Art exhibition

Home Turf, an exhibition of more than 20 artists exploring and celebrating the unique architecture, history, environment, community and art of Chelmer, Graceville, Sherwood and surrounds is coming to Brisbane.

Home Turf, curated by long-time Sherwood local Leanne McIntyre, will be held over one weekend 10-11 July 2021.

This local event will activate the Walter Taylor-designed local landmark, the Graceville Uniting Church Hall precinct as a creative space while connecting local artists with the community.

The exhibition includes free artist talks and art workshops for children and adults. People can also join an architectural walking tour or sketching workshop that will explore this unique area that features many of Walter Taylor’s buildings including the Walter Taylor Bridge at Indooroopilly, the Graceville Uniting Church and Hall, his former workshop and historic Graceville homes. The art exhibition will include paintings, photography, drawings, prints, sculpture and ceramics which will be available for sale.

One of the highlights of the opening night on Saturday 10 July from 6-7.30pm, coinciding with NAIDOC week is an impressive Indigenous art projection that will illuminate the outside of the heritage-listed Graceville Uniting Church on Oxley Road Graceville. The art projection is the result of a unique collaboration between Indigenous artist Kane Brunjes and projection artist Mobius.

Bounded by the Brisbane River, the area suffered badly during the 2011 floods with many houses submerged. A decade later, the exhibition is an opportunity to reflect, connect and celebrate this unique neighbourhood and its artists. The Home Turf event is funded by a Creative Sparks Grant from the Brisbane City Council and is curated by local creative Leanne McIntyre, Home Turf Art. The Creative Sparks Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council to support local arts and culture in Brisbane.
