GOMA Turns 10 Opening Weekend Celebrations

GOMA is turning 10, and it’s coming in hot with a huge range of free activities to celebrate! The weekend will be overflowing with art, cultural events and free talks for all to enjoy.

There will be a thrilling panel discussion on Saturday at 11:00 am in Cinema A, bringing together QAGOMA’s creative minds as they discuss the process involved in showcasing 10 years of GOMA’s Collection. Brisbane artist Judy Watson will appear in front of GOMA at 1:30 pm on Saturday as she discusses her newly commissioned public artwork Tow Row. The final treat on Saturday is an architecture walking tour, starting at 2:30 pm to take keen patrons on a journey to discover behind the scenes insights into the design of the award-winning building.

On Sunday, join artist Anthony McCall in conversation with QAGOMA Director Chris Saines as they discuss Anthony’s newly commissioned work Crossing. The River Lounge goes bricky at 12:30 pm – drop-in and gain inspiration from members of Brisbane-based LEGO® enthusiast club, BrisBricks, as they create extraordinary formations within Olafur Eliasson’s The cubic structural evolution project. You can also join Judy Watson, Queensland Indigenous Artist Public Art Commission recipient, with Leecee Carmichael for a free weaving workshop inspired by local indigenous traditions at 1:00 pm on the Maiwar Green.

Sunday also kicks off the Sugar Hits Monthly Floor talk, with Geraldine Kirrihi Barlow elaborating on the different chapters in Sugar Spin: You, me, art and everything. This floor talk will explore the Sweetmelt chapter of the exhibition. At 12:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday, patrons can take to the GOMA foyer for performances of artist Nick Cave’s spectacular HEARD, as this group of brightly coloured sculptural horse costumes are brought to life by dancers. The gallery will be showing the major exhibits Sugar Spin, A World View: The Tim Fairfax Gift and Lucent.
