Game Changers – in conversation with Matthew and Daniel Tobin
State Library of Queensland’s much anticipated third Game Changers conversation for 2020 showcases Matthew and Daniel Tobin, Co-Founders of Urban Art Projects (UAP). Hear how the brothers grew their Western Brisbane workshop into a global leader in public art and architectural design solutions in this live-streamed chat on Wednesday September 9.
Matthew Tobin, Co-Founder and Managing Director, UAP
Matthew and his brother Daniel established the company in 1993, as a studio and workshop in which to collaborate with artists and create artwork for the public realm. These days Matthew oversees all operations of the company, spending his time in the Brisbane, Shanghai and New York studios. Matthew’s primary focus is strategic business growth and UAP’s engagement with advanced manufacturing techniques and Industry 4.0. Matthew has played an integral role in UAP’s evolution from a small Brisbane workshop to an international brand, fostering an outlook that embraces all creative possibilities. From 2009 – 2012 he was based in China establishing UAP’s Shanghai office. Matthew has a vast knowledge of all aspects of project delivery, providing sound governance which enables the ever-expanding UAP team to undertake jobs which push the levels of innovative fabrication and artisanal craftsmanship.
Daniel Tobin, Co-Founder and Creative Director, UAP
As Creative Director, Daniel works closely with the company’s art and design teams in Brisbane, Shanghai and New York. Throughout 28 years of practice, Daniel has been instrumental in delivering critical projects throughout Asia, the Middle East, North America and Australia. His artwork “Gathered Together” has been commissioned by the West Hollywood Foundation as the concept underpinning the creation of a National AIDS Monument to be built in 2020. Apart from creative leadership of UAP’s art + design team, Daniel is also leading UAP’s sustainability and eco-efficiency agenda supporting it to become FutureNormal: an organisation that is fit for the 21st century, acts meaningfully in its surroundings, aims for 100% wellbeing and sees money as a means, not an end.
