Fragments II: Belgrade

Fragments II: Belgrade

Celebrating Brisbane’s diversity during Queensland Multicultural Month, BEMAC presents Fragments II: Belgrade by Serbian-Australian contemporary visual artist Vesna Klačar-Nedimović. Queensland Multicultural Month, a Queensland Government initiative, will be celebrated for the first time in August 2016 and includes Multicultural Arts & Culture Week (August 8-14) and Queensland Multicultural Week (August 22-30).

Queensland is home to people from more than 220 countries and is culturally richer for the contribution of diverse artists such as Vesna. The exhibition features Vesna’s limited edition digital prints and etchings.

Art critic Louise Martin-Chew describes the works as follows: “The series of artworks Fragments II: Belgrade show an architectural façade overlaid with a map that describes the way the city is laced into the artist’s memory – it is an exploration of her personal, familial and cultural ties to the city of her youth.

“Vesna overlaps her images and text rather like the process of layering contemporary culture over all that has gone before. The use of text adds information and an access point that is both evocative and documentary, the organic and twisting topographic lines of natural features and rivers contrast with architectural images that are man-made in their perfect curves and straightness.”
