The floating world: Simon MacEwan

Visit The floating world to see a purpose built drawing machine at work. As a pivoting arm moves a pen across slowly revolving paper, it draws loops that become spirals, creating increasingly intricate drawings. See the exhibition grow as new work is created each day.

In The floating world, a drawing machine, which takes its inspiration from 19th-century banknote engraving lathes, slowly traces elaborate patterns using data from international currency and commodity markets.

Adopting the language of banknote design originally meant to reassure people of the reliability of currency, the variations in these drawings make visible the volatility and instability of money.
