Bright, Bold, Boundless: Designing the Queen's Baton

Bright, Bold, Boundless: Designing the Queen’s Baton

Bright, Bold, Boundless: Designing the Queen’s Baton is a chance to explore the captivating story behind the innovative Queen’s Baton for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games at State Library of Queensland.

The primary source of inspiration for the baton comes form the spirit of the Gold Coast, the energising spark of the people and the place inspired the design to be a symbol of the past, present and future. Designed, engineered and manufactured by Brisbane-based Designworks, the Queen’s Baton is set to create history for the city and the people, becoming an icon of the games.

Bright, Bold, Boundless transports you to the centre of design thinking in practice and the history of this longstanding Commonwealth Games tradition. Video diaries, prototypes, early sketches and interviews will be displayed in order to unearth the creative process behind the baton’s design – using local materials and recycled plastic from the Gold Coast waters, immerse yourself in the design process that prides itself on the use of ‘smart’ materials and structure. Not only is this an opportunity to learn about the upcoming games, the exhibition also offers a unique chance to see past batons from Commonwealth Games, and provides visitors an up close experience with rarely seen Commonwealth games memorabilia.

From sports fans to design minds, Bright Bold Boundless: Designing the Queen’s Baton is an opportunity to discover an example of Australian design at its most creative, as well as offering a lifetime experience to discover the history of the games.
