Brisbane International Film Festival

Brisbane International Film Festival

The Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF) will run from October 24 to November 3, 2024 at seven cinema locations across Brisbane; Palace Barracks, Dendy Coorparoo, Dendy Portside and Dendy Outdoor, Reading Newmarket, Five Star New Farm and the Angelika Film Centre.

Creating a massive buzz premiering at Toronto International Film Festival and starring Academy Award® nominee Amy Adams, BIFF is proud to present the Queensland Premiere of NIGHTBITCH , based on the bestselling 2021 novel of the same name.  Director Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me) has created a film following a former career woman turned stay-at-home mom, whose ordinary life takes a surreal twist as her maternal instincts begin to manifest in canine form.

Winner of the coveted Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, BIFF is thrilled to include the Queensland Premiere of Sean Baker’s ANORA. This Queensland Premiere stars Mikey Madison who has received critical acclaim for her portrayal of a young sex worker from Brooklyn who gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. Once the news reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as the parents set out for New York to get the marriage annulled.

Making its World Premiere at BIFF this year, audiences can walk the Red Carpet with the cast and crew of THE RED, directed by Ryan Coonan.  This thrilling Australian horror stars Michael Beihn (Terminator, Aliens), Tess Haubrich (The Wolverine, Aliens: Covenant), Aaron Pederson and Angie Milliken.   Set in a remote Australian town, the film follows local police officer Maddy as she battles a giant zombie kangaroo known as Rippy. With its mix of horror, comedy, and stunning outback scenery, THE RED is set to become an instant cult classic.

Directed by David and Nathan Sellner featuring Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough, BIFF is presenting the Queensland Premiere of SASQUATCH SUNSET.  Set in the misty forests of North America, a family of Sasquatches – possibly the last of their enigmatic kind – embark on an absurdist, epic, hilarious, and ultimately poignant journey over the course of one year.  This film recently captivated audiences at the Sundance and  Berlin Film Festival.

Rounding out the first look is the Queensland premiere of TATAMI.  Co-directed by Guy Nattiv and Zar Amir Ebrahimi, TATAMI offers a gripping exploration of the world of judo, focusing on an Iranian athlete forced to make a life-altering decision. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, stars Arienne Mandi in a powerful role that delves into themes of cultural identity and personal sacrifice.

BIFF’s full program promises an exceptional line up of Australian and International films and will be released September 26. This first wave of films adds to the already announced Opening and Closing Night films with the Opening Night Queensland Premiere of SATURDAY NIGHT and the powerful World Premiere of UNBREAKABLE: THE JELENA DOKIC STORY.
