Backyard beekeeping

Backyard beekeeping

Beekeeping is a fulfilling and rewarding experience that can be done by everyone. Join Danny van der Walle for a demonstration on some of the techniques that can be used for small-scale backyard beekeeping and learn the best way to start your hive and produce your own honey.

Danny is Senior Parks Co-ordinator for Brisbane City Council and is a keen apiarist. He started keeping bees 40 years ago at the age of 14, and currently has enough hives incorporated into his permaculture system to support himself and his family. Danny brings a wealth of professional and personal experience to this workshop and will share his expertise including understanding bees at a suburban backyard level.

Requirements: All children must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear a wide-brimmed hat, secure, fully enclosed walking shoes, sun-smart clothing, sunscreen and insect repellent. Please bring drinking water and a snack or picnic lunch as there are no food outlets on site. Note: activities are subject to weather and environmental conditions and may be cancelled on the day.
